Red China Expresses Concern

American senior leadership gave little thought to how their Red Chinese counterparts would respond to the presence of a large hostile military force near their border. Red China issued many warnings, beginning on 20 August, that they would not tolerate an American-supported government on their border with North Korea. Their numerous warnings were seen only as bluffs to keep UN forces away from the border.

The Soviet representative to the UN also warned on 22 August about the possible widening of the conflict. It had become evident to the senior leadership of the Soviet Union and Red China that the North Korean invasion of South Korea had failed. They therefore correctly deduced that MacArthur’s UN forces’ command would advance into North Korea.

Red Chinese Premier Mao Tse-tung decided to intervene on behalf of the North Korean government on 4 October. Large numbers of Red Chinese Army formations, referred to by Western commentators as the Chinese Communist Force (CCF), began to enter North Korea between 14 and 20 October. By 20 October there were four CCF field armies in North Korea totalling approximately 130,000 men. The Red Chinese government referred to their soldiers entering North Korea as ‘volunteers’.
